Why “Becoming”?

I chose the word “becoming” as a reminder that we are on a journey and you are on your own unique journey. I hope to step away from setting goals and to approach each practice as unique and without expectations or desires and to allow it to unfold in whatever way it does.

My intention as a teacher is to hold a space for you to explore what your practice means to you. Below are three ideas that we will explore throughout all my classes and even though I have shared my thoughts, please know that your understanding of what it is to become strong, calm and still is what’s most valuable.

Becoming STRONG

What is strength? For me, strength comes in many different guises. We want to feel physically strong because it allows us to move through the physical aspects of life with more ease and it’s also empowering to feel strong and stable within our bodies. There is also inner strength, the strength to find acceptance of who we are and to go through life unapologetically. Becoming STRONG is something we will explore in all my classes with the knowledge that strength is relative to the life you lead and the life you have lead. Remember, we are not hoping to compete in the Olympics, unless you are, but my point is, together we will explore what becoming STRONG means for you and bring an awareness to how it changes as we go through life.

Becoming CALM

Now here’s a challenge, staying clam when situations around you are anything but. My classes offer a bit of space and time to explore ways to find calm. We will spend time reconnecting with our breath, the subtleties of our bodies as we move through our practice and bring an awareness to the patterns of our thoughts. Can we find a softness in the body even when we are executing a physically demanding pose? Can we keep the breath steady? Can we be kind and patient with the words we speak to ourselves? Last but maybe the most important, can we take these techniques off the mat and into our day to day lives?

Becoming QUIET

How often in your day do you take time to become quiet in both body and mind? We live busy lives and even when we physically stop our minds keep whirring. All of my classes offer space and time to become quiet and sometimes this is the most challenging part of the class.
